The short answer
It depends on how far away the wedding is when you cancel. In the contract we read, cancelling 90 days or more before the date returned the full deposit, cancelling between 45 and 90 days before returned half of it, and cancelling less than 45 days before returned nothing. Your own contract may use different numbers, but most venues work on a ladder like this one: the closer the date, the less comes back.
How the payments are staged
- A deposit when you sign, in this contract EGP 20,000, which holds the date.
- 50 percent of the total, due 30 days before the wedding.
- The full balance, due 48 hours before the wedding.
- A minimum guest count (200 in this contract), with the exact number confirmed about two weeks before. If fewer guests come, you still pay for the minimum.
- Tied vendors. The couple had to use the hotel's own decor, lighting, photography and entertainment companies, and outside food or drinks needed the hotel's approval and a fee.
The cancellation ladder
- 01
90 days or more before the wedding
The full deposit comes back. This is the window to act in if there is any doubt about the date.
- 02
Between 45 and 90 days before
Half of the deposit comes back. The venue keeps the rest.
- 03
Less than 45 days before
Nothing comes back. By the 30-day mark you will also have paid 50 percent of the total, which is why late cancellations cost so much.
The small print that catches couples out
- Refunds by cheque only, made out to the person who signed the contract (in this contract, within 21 days of cancelling). Not cash, not a transfer, and not to anyone else.
- Postponement once only, requested at least a month before and subject to the hotel's availability. After you postpone, you lose the right to cancel, so the money already paid is tied to the new date.
- Any breach of the contract lets the venue treat it as void and keep everything paid so far, without notice or a court ruling. A missed payment date is the usual trigger.
- Nothing about transfers. Contracts usually say nothing about passing the booking to another couple, so a transfer only happens if the venue agrees.
Three ways couples hand over a date
- 01
The venue changes the name on the booking
The cleanest route. The venue moves your booking, and the payments on it, to the new couple's names and confirms it to both of you in writing. The new couple repays you what you agree.
- 02
The new couple books, and the venue refunds you
The new couple signs their own contract for the same date, and the venue releases your booking and refunds you under your contract. Ask the venue to confirm both steps in writing before anyone pays.
- 03
A private cash swap
The couples settle between themselves and the booking stays in the first couple's name. It is risky for both sides: the venue never agreed, any refund cheque can only go to the original signatory, and a breach can void the booking. We don't recommend it.
What we recommend
Use a venue-confirmed route, either a name change or a re-booking with a refund, and get the venue's confirmation in writing before any money moves between couples. Don't hand over original receipts or the contract until the venue has confirmed the new names.
Timing matters as much as the route. If you list early, while the wedding is still more than 90 days away, you have the most options: another couple can take the date over, and if no one does, you can still cancel for the full deposit under a contract like this one.
List your date before the 90-day mark
Save the Date Egypt is a free place where couples in Cairo and Alexandria who can't use their booked venue date list it, and couples who are looking find it. Every listing is reviewed by hand, numbers stay private until both sides agree, and the transfer is arranged with the venue. We never handle money.
This guide is general information based on one real contract, not legal advice. Your contract decides your rights, so read it closely and ask the venue in writing before you act.
Questions couples ask
Do I get my wedding deposit back if I cancel in Egypt?
It depends on your contract and how far away the wedding is. In a five-star hotel contract we read in Alexandria, cancelling 90 days or more before the date returned the full deposit, 45 to 90 days returned half, and less than 45 days returned nothing.
How are wedding deposit refunds paid?
Often by cheque only, made out to the person who signed the contract. Check your contract before you agree anything with another couple, because the venue may refuse to pay anyone else.
Can I postpone my wedding instead of cancelling?
Usually, but often only once and only with enough notice. In the contract we read, postponing once removed the right to cancel afterwards, so the money already paid stays tied to the new date.
Can another couple take over my wedding venue booking?
Only if the venue agrees, because most contracts say nothing about transfers. The safest route is for the venue to change the name on the booking, or for the new couple to book and the venue to refund you, confirmed in writing.
When should I list my date on Save the Date Egypt?
As early as you can, ideally more than 90 days before the wedding. That gives another couple time to take it over, and if no one does, you can still cancel for a full deposit refund under a contract like the one we read.
